Did you know that the first official observance to honor deceased veterans was headed by Henry Welles and General John Murray in Waterloo, NY in 1866? The State of New York recognized Waterloo for their remembrance post ceremony, followed shortly after by the House of Representatives and the Senate, who unanimously proclaimed this city as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. This observance has been recognized annually ever since and Waterloo, NY continues to hold this holiday to high standards when it comes to their events.
This year, they will be holding their 152nd consecutive Memorial Day Observance with events happening from May 25th through May 27th, including, but not limited to a parade and a 5K run/walk on May 26th, as well as a car show on May 27th.
